Actually Fun Activities for Dry January
Dry January doesn’t have to be synonymous with Boring January. There are plenty of things to enjoy during your sober stint that don’t involve going to a bar. When was the last time you went bowling? This is also the perfect time of year to catch up on all the Oscar nominated films or finish that video game you swore you would.
If you’re looking for something to scratch your social itch, why not host a game night? Save money and stay in with some party games and crack open a cold one (La Croix).
Jackbox party games are perfect for your sober soiree. Yeah, yeah, they’re fun when you’ve had a few too many therefore think the same dirty joke is funny over and over in Quiplash. But have you considered… actually having the mental fortitude to craft a real punchline?
Wild, I know!
Here are some recommendations for your Dry January game night:
All My Homies Love Quixort
When you take a break from drinking, especially if your social life is centered around it, it can feel like you’re missing out on the fun by abstaining. I’m telling you… this game will get the energy going more than a $50 round of shots.
In Quixort (Party Pack 9), you and your friends will divide into teams. As blocks fall, you’ll work together to sort them into the correct order. You’ll be tasked with arranging celebrities from shortest to tallest or roman numerals from smallest to largest. This trivia game will have you and your friends howling this Dry January.
A Sober Mind for Social Deduction
If you spend your weekends getting a little too lost in the sauce, a break from aforementioned sauce can provide you with mental clarity that feels… weird. Channel that laser-sharp focus into a social deduction game. Destroy your friends with your renewed concentration skills.
Jackbox has a few fantastic social deduction games that are perfect for Dry January, including Fakin’ It (Party Pack 3) and Weapons Drawn (Party Pack 8).
In Fakin’ It, you’ll receive secret prompts on your phone and will need to react accordingly. One player will be assigned the role of the Faker. This person will not receive the same prompt, and will have to, well, fake it and avoid suspicion.
Your Dry January mental clarity will also make you the perfect detective in a game of Weapons Drawn… and maybe also the perfect killer. In Weapons Drawn, you’ll kill unsuspecting party guests and leave a calling card at the scene of the crime. See if you can get away with murder while stopping others.
Keep it Chill
Maybe you’re partaking in Dry January because you’re trying to avoid the chaos. Many of our games can be chill or not chill depending on the group you’re playing with. A couple titles that lend themselves to a quieter group include Civic Doodle (Party Pack 4) and Blather ‘Round (Party Pack 7).
In Civic Doodle, two players draw at once, adding whatever they choose to a simple starter drawing. When the time’s up, everyone votes on which drawing is the “best.” The winner’s drawing becomes the new “base drawing” that the next two players add to, in the same fashion as the first round.
Blather ‘Round will challenge you and your friends to get on the same wavelength. In this guessing game, you’ll describe pop culture items to your friends with limited options.
Options For Everyone
Whether sobriety is an experiment or a permanent lifestyle choice for you, you are deserving of all the joy and laughter you can handle. Jackbox party games can bring out the best and weirdest and funniest in you and your friends… no sauce required.
With so many options to choose from, your sober game night doesn’t need to get stale. Plan a trivia-only night with some of our best trivia games one week, and then inspire your inner artist with drawing games the next.
